Illustrator Tutorial – Gradients and 3D

3D and Gradients

In today’s session we covered the basics of gradients and using the 3D effect on illustrator.

The first task was to make a letter and have a shadow coming off using a gradient. I cut the shapes out using the shape builder tool. This was the result:

The second task consisted of us making a quick sketch of a pepper using the pen tool and then adding a mesh to the front of the pepper to make a reflection look. I then learnt the shortcut of U which is for the mesh tool so I could adjust the points of the mesh.

This task was to create a realistic looking sphere shape using  gradients and masks. Firstly I added the spotlight on the sphere by creating a circle and adding a spherical gradient on it. The second step was to create duplicates of the main shape and adjust the colour to a darker colour then added another layer with a black and white gradient. I then created a mask out of this layer and it created a shadow look at the bottom of the sphere.

This was a quick task to make a rectangle and add a gradient to the shape. Then i would add black text on top of the rectangle and then make a mask of the text to reveal a gradient fiil line of text.

I learnt a new tool in this task. I created a shape and then added circles on top and used the transform-divide tool to create a shape with holes. I then went to effect-3D-extrude and bevel and played with the settings to make a 3D version of the original shape.

This final task we used the 3d-revolve tool to make a glass shape and a random shape. The glass was made by making a basic line shape suing the pen tool and then creating the revolve effect. The second one was created using a line of random circles and then using the shape builder tool to but off half the image. Then I revolved the shape and got an interesting 3D shape.

From this task I learnt that there are many ways to make 3D and textured vector art in Illustrator. The shape builder tool is a really helpful tool to merge shapes together and I know I will definitely use this tool in the production of my poster.
